iOS devices like iPhones and iPads can be centrally Managed by your company's I.T. unit.
Settings, software, wallpaper, and restrictions can be sent "over the air" to devices that are configured by your company using something called an MDM (mobile device management) system. The following steps walk you through a typical deployment of an iPad which is enrolled in an MDM.
When you start up a new or erased iPad or iPhone, the setup assistant.
Press the home button to continue.
Tap "English"
Tap "Canada"
Tap a known safe WiFi network
Your organization may operate a WiFi network or you may have one at home.
You may be promted to enter the password for the WiFi network, and you MAY need to tap the Next link in the top right corner.
The iPad will check in with the MDM system and activate itself
Location Services allow your organization to locate the iPad if it is ever lost or stolen-- please be sure to Enable Location Services -- Tap "Enable Location Services"
The iPad will connect to the MDM and begin receiving your organization's settings, software, and other artifacts.
Create a passcode to secure the device when it's not in use
Enter your Apple ID
Note that if you use your existing Apple ID, the iPad will synchronize its iCloud information for your convenience. Tap the Next link.
Apple needs you to agree to some basic terms and conditions -- tap the Agree link
Siri will take dictation among other things -- turn on Siri by tapping the link
You can help the community by allowing Apple to receive diagnostic information in the background from your iPad. Tap Send to Apple to accept this.
Third party software developers like Microsoft can benefit if you allow your crash and activity data to be shared. Tap Share with App Developers to accept this.
The Setup Assistant is complete... tap Get Started to continue and perform a few more steps below to finish preparing the iPad.
Allow the MDM to send settings and software to the iPad
Enter your Apple ID password and click OK. The MDM is signalling the iPad to begin installing prescribed software from the App Store.
Dismiss the message instructing you about how to rearrange icons on your Home Screen (read it first)
*IMPORTANT* - The MDM will install a custom Wallpaper and begin installing prescribed software-- allow some time
This may take some time-- it's best to have the iPad connected to power and monitor its status for a little while to ensure the downloads and installations all complete before leaving your WiFi network.
*OPTIONAL* - If you swipe right, you may see the Notification Center
You may be asked to allow certain apps access to your location-- this can be helpful for apps like Weather. Tap Allow to accept this.
When the installations are complete
To ensure that the device is fully compliant with company policy, please open the Meraki MDM app-- this will validate that the device can be remotely wiped, locked, or located if it's ever lost or stolen.
Please allow the MDM to send you notifications
Please enable Location Services
Please allow the MDM to locate the device
Once the steps above are done, all of the "Compliance" elements will indicate green checkmarks. If there is an exception, please open a Support Request.
*OPTIONAL* - log in to Box
If you are planning to access your organization's document respository, you may want to ensure you can log in to Box.
*OPTIONAL* - log in to Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
In order to use Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, you may want to log in using your special "Office 365" credentials-- this is the mechanism that Microsoft uses to ensure your licensing is in compliance.
*OPTIONAL* - if you'd like to use the Mail app on the iPad, you may need to add your Mailbox.
To add an account, open Settings, and tap on Mail then Accounts
Then tap Add Account
Choose Exchange
Enter your email address (for your Exchange account), your password, and a description of the mail account (eg: Exchange)
Erase the iPad when you're done using it
To ensure your information is safe and secure, it's always best to Erase the iPad when you're done using it. This also ensures that the next person to use it won't accidentally compromise your data.
Go to Settings and tap General, then tap Reset
Tap Erase All Content and Settings
Because this is non-reversible, the iPad wants you to authenticate-- be absolutely sure you want to erase and enter your Apple ID password
